What Causes Mould?

Mould = Moisture + time + food source

Our brochure gives you an understanding of what causes mould in a home and ways you can mitigate the problem.

Mould needs moisture to form, time to grow, and food source to digest. Moisture can come from water leaks or condensation. If the water is dried quickly, mould won’t grow. It also grows more easily on things it can digest, like wood, furniture, paper, cardboard, or even dust.

In cool weather, moisture often comes from condensation when warm, humid air hits cold surfaces (windows, external corners, behind furniture, wardrobes).

Common guidance: control moisture at the source, keep indoor humidity from staying high (aim <~60% Relative Humidity most of the time), and dry wet materials within 24–48 hours.
